Summary
This chapter reviews research on the efficacy of training Working Memory (WM) in an educational context. We begin with a brief description of WM, its relation to classroom constructs, an overview of WM training programs, followed by classroom recommendations pertaining to several case studies. We characterize WM training programs into two categories: those that are narrow in scope and those that are broad in scope. Narrow-scope WM training programs are similar to a WM test, while broad-scope WM training programs train WM in the context of broader abilities, such as executive function, attention, or learning skills. Additionally, we discuss the efficacy of WM training with respect to near- or far-transfer effects. Near transfer refers to improvements that are similar to the training program, such as improvements in WM tasks, while far-transfer effects refer to improvements in skills related to the area of training, such as other executive function skills such as inhibition, updating, and planning, as well as attention and fluid intelligence (IQ). We also report whether transfer effects are short-lived or long-lasting (maintenance effects). Finally a discussion regarding implementing WM training in the classroom and future directions are provided.

Background: Efficient monitoring of devices to ensure timely removal is an ongoing challenge. There is a need for data visualization products that can aggregate disparate data streams to support device reviews, increase consistency across changes in caregiver teams, and synergize with people and operational processes within and across regional acute-care facilities. Methods: A data display application was developed to provide data from nearly any source in a consistent visual representation that could be used in real time. The infection prevention (IP) overlay combined data related to urinary catheters, central vascular catheters, and femoral vascular catheters from the electronic health record system. Clinical and data experts collaborated to develop data definitions, inclusion criteria, and report components. The application display indicated the current catheter or device status of each patient facility-wide, organized by service unit (Fig. 1). Additional patient information could be accessed from within the application, and a comment feature allowed caregivers to communicate directly through the tool (Fig. 2). Results: Pilot implementation began February 2021, and the NATE IP application was live for all users (unit and facility leaders, providers, infection preventionists, etc) as of July 2021. The tool is currently available for use at 171 acute-care hospitals within the HCA healthcare system, and it accommodated 3 different electronic medical record systems. Usage peaked in August 2021, with an average of 1,700 views per day. Daily utilization maximum ranges from 1,100 to 1,500 views per day, with an average of ~1,300 views per day. The tool is used during daily patient safety rounds, including weekends and holidays. User feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with users reporting an increase in communication, streamlined documentation, improved tracking of reasons to retain, and increased accountability for daily updates. During the proof-of-concept implementation, zero bugs were identified and several feature enhancements were implemented, including addition of port status and device-day reporting counts. Planned enhancements include mupirocin and chlorhexidine bathing use, isolation precaution use, and blood cultures ordered >3 days after admission. Conclusions: The NATE IP tool brings together data related devices into a single view for use by direct caregivers and all levels of leadership. Development of this or similar tools to consolidate various data streams into a central tool facilitates improved communication and consistency between caregiver teams. It also drives operational efficiencies and improves safety. Expansion to incorporate notifications related to potential issue will expand the proactive utility of this tool.

Background
Questions remain regarding whether genetic influences on early life psychopathology overlap with cognition and show developmental variation.
MethodsUsing data from 9,421 individuals aged 8–21 from the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort, factors of psychopathology were generated using a bifactor model of item-level data from a psychiatric interview. Five orthogonal factors were generated: anxious-misery (mood and anxiety), externalizing (attention deficit hyperactivity and conduct disorder), fear (phobias), psychosis-spectrum, and a general factor. Genetic analyses were conducted on a subsample of 4,662 individuals of European American ancestry. A genetic relatedness matrix was used to estimate heritability of these factors, and genetic correlations with executive function, episodic memory, complex reasoning, social cognition, motor speed, and general cognitive ability. Gene × Age analyses determined whether genetic influences on these factors show developmental variation.
ResultsExternalizing was heritable (h2 = 0.46, p = 1 × 10−6), but not anxious-misery (h2 = 0.09, p = 0.183), fear (h2 = 0.04, p = 0.337), psychosis-spectrum (h2 = 0.00, p = 0.494), or general psychopathology (h2 = 0.21, p = 0.040). Externalizing showed genetic overlap with face memory (ρg = −0.412, p = 0.004), verbal reasoning (ρg = −0.485, p = 0.001), spatial reasoning (ρg = −0.426, p = 0.010), motor speed (ρg = 0.659, p = 1x10−4), verbal knowledge (ρg = −0.314, p = 0.002), and general cognitive ability (g)(ρg = −0.394, p = 0.002). Gene × Age analyses revealed decreasing genetic variance (γg = −0.146, p = 0.004) and increasing environmental variance (γe = 0.059, p = 0.009) on externalizing.
ConclusionsCognitive impairment may be a useful endophenotype of externalizing psychopathology and, therefore, help elucidate its pathophysiological underpinnings. Decreasing genetic variance suggests that gene discovery efforts may be more fruitful in children than adolescents or young adults.

Continental Antarctica is a polar desert containing sparse pockets of vegetation within ice-free areas. Despite the recognized association between lichens, mosses and epiphytic diatoms, the environmental factors controlling diatom community structure are poorly understood. We investigated the association between diatom communities and host vegetation characteristics by experimentally adding nutrients and/or water to two bryophyte (healthy and moribund) and two lichen (crustose and Usnea) vegetation types in the Windmill Islands. Diatom communities were morphologically characterized, diversity indices calculated and differences between treatments, vegetation type and vegetation characteristics tested. We identified 49 diatom taxa, 8 of which occurred with > 1% relative abundance. Bryophyte and lichen vegetation harboured significantly different diatom communities, both in composition and diversity indices. Specifically, Luticola muticopsis was more prevalent in moribund bryophytes and crustose lichens, and Usnea lichens showed lower species richness than other types. While nutrient and water additions did not significantly alter diatom communities, diversity indices and some species showed relationships with vegetation physiological characteristics, notably %N and δ13C, suggesting the importance of ambient gradients in water and nutrient availability. Collectively, this work suggests that future conditions favouring the dominance of a particular vegetation type may have a homogenizing effect on the terrestrial diatom communities of East Antarctica.

Can multicellular life be distinguished from single cellular life on an exoplanet? We hypothesize that abundant upright photosynthetic multicellular life (trees) will cast shadows at high sun angles that will distinguish them from single cellular life and test this using Earth as an exoplanet. We first test the concept using unmanned aerial vehicles at a replica moon-landing site near Flagstaff, Arizona and show trees have both a distinctive reflectance signature (red edge) and geometric signature (shadows at high sun angles) that can distinguish them from replica moon craters. Next, we calculate reflectance signatures for Earth at several phase angles with POLDER (Polarization and Directionality of Earth's reflectance) satellite directional reflectance measurements and then reduce Earth to a single pixel. We compare Earth to other planetary bodies (Mars, the Moon, Venus and Uranus) and hypothesize that Earth's directional reflectance will be between strongly backscattering rocky bodies with no weathering (like Mars and the Moon) and cloudy bodies with more isotropic scattering (like Venus and Uranus). Our modelling results put Earth in line with strongly backscattering Mars, while our empirical results put Earth in line with more isotropic scattering Venus. We identify potential weaknesses in both the modelled and empirical results and suggest additional steps to determine whether this technique could distinguish upright multicellular life on exoplanets.
